Is Wingaersheek Beach a Good Location for Senior Photos?
Wingaersheek Beach senior photos in Gloucester are a great choice if your senior wants a beach session with more than just sand and ocean in the background. Between the rocky shoreline, dunes, beach grasses, water and even the iconic tree near the edge of the beach, there are plenty of ways to create variety without ever leaving the area. That was one of the reasons I chose Wingaersheek for Cam, a Class of 2027 senior at Dracut High School.
Cam knew he wanted his senior photos at the beach, but he left the final location up to me. His two choices were Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester or Plum Island in Newburyport, both locations I photograph often. Based on Cam and the kind of senior photography experience we were planning, I thought Wingaersheek was the better fit. It gave us the relaxed beach setting he wanted while the rocks, dunes and more natural landscape gave us plenty of options for a senior guy session.
A Laid-Back Senior Guy Session at the Beach
Cam is pretty laid back and quiet, although I wouldn’t necessarily call him shy. He’s a varsity baseball and varsity hockey player at Dracut High School, and after graduation he’s considering studying physics or mechanical engineering. His ultimate goal is a pretty cool one: he wants to design roller coasters.
For his Wingaersheek Beach senior photos in Gloucester, we kept his clothing simple and very much like him. He brought two outfits, both with short-sleeved collared button-down shirts and shorts. Changing the colors gave us enough variety without putting him into something that didn’t feel natural. That’s something I always want seniors to keep in mind when choosing outfits. You don’t need to reinvent yourself for senior photos. The goal is to look like yourself.
What Happens During a Wingaersheek Beach Senior Session?
We photographed Cam on August 16 at golden hour, and the weather gave us a beautiful combination of soft sunlight and some clouds in the sky. The beach itself was another story. It was insanely crowded. There were plenty of beachgoers enjoying an August evening and LOTS of other photographers doing exactly what we were doing. The end of summer is a very popular season for senior beach photography. Fortunately, that’s something I can work around. Part of my job is paying attention to what’s happening around us, choosing angles carefully and moving through the location so your senior doesn’t have to worry about the crowd. During Cam’s one-hour session, we photographed along the rocky shoreline, in the dunes, near the water, on the beach and around the iconic tree at the edge of Wingaersheek. Even on a busy summer evening, we were able to create a gallery with plenty of variety.

You Don’t Have to Know How to Pose for Senior Photos
One thing parents often worry about, especially when they’re planning senior photos for their son, is whether he’s actually going to know what to do in front of the camera. Cam was very comfortable taking direction, and he has a naturally photogenic quality about him. But that doesn’t mean I simply put him in front of my camera and expected him to figure everything out. I gave him direction for poses and movement throughout the session and adjusted what we were doing based on what looked and felt natural for him.
That’s a big part of my approach to senior photography. I don’t expect seniors to arrive knowing how to pose. Most of them have never done anything like this before. My job is to guide them enough that they aren’t wondering what they’re supposed to do, while still giving them room to look and feel like themselves.
From a Family Session to Senior Year
There was another reason this particular session meant a little more to me.
I first photographed Cam back in 2021 during a family session with his mom and his two younger brothers. When I saw him again for his senior session, I couldn’t get over how much he’d changed. He had gotten SO tall, and I think I commented more than once about how much darker his hair had gotten.
It’s strange how quickly those changes happen. When you’re living through the everyday parts of raising kids, you don’t always notice them. Then you pull out a photograph from five years ago and suddenly you see it.
That’s one of the reasons I believe so strongly that photographs need to exist beyond our phones. That family portrait from 2021 isn’t simply an old photo anymore. It shows one chapter of their family’s story. These Wingaersheek Beach senior photos in Gloucester will show another.
And I feel pretty lucky that I was invited back to photograph both.
What Happens to Your Senior Photos After the Session?
The senior experience doesn’t end when we leave the beach. After Cam’s images are fully edited, he and his mom will come in for their reveal and ordering appointment. We’ll look through the photographs together, choose their favorites and decide how they want to preserve them in print.
After seeing Cam’s finished images, his mom chose eight gift prints from his senior session, some to keep in their own home and some to give to his grandparents.
I love that these photographs won’t only live on a phone or computer. They’ll become part of the homes of the people who know and love Cam best.
His grandparents will have photographs of who he was during his senior year. His family will have them too. And just like that family photograph I took back in 2021 means something different to them today, I have a feeling these will become more meaningful as the years go by.
Because five years from now, Cam will look different again. His life will look different too. Maybe he’ll even be designing that roller coaster he’s already dreaming about.
But they’ll have these photographs to remember exactly who he was right now.
